Filipino Teachers in Los Angeles and FAEALA

Balitang America (ABS-CBN) reports on the initial experiences of Filipino teachers recruited to fill shortages in teaching positions in Los Angeles. This segment originally aired on October 7, 2008. Yong B. Chavez reporting.

Filipino American Educators Association, Inc. of Los Angeles (FAEALA or FAEA, Inc.) is a voluntary non-profit organization composed of retired and current educators. In the past, it was the Los Angeles affiliate of the statewide Filipino American Educators Association of California (FAEAC).

FAEA (LA) was established in March 24, 1974 by Dr. Milagros R. Aquino Ruiz, Bibiana Ruiz and Helen Brown who gathered Filipino American teachers in a forum where they could address their personal and professional needs. In its early beginnings, FAEA served as the first destination for teachers who came to the United States for support, shelter and encouragement.

Later, FAEA (LA) evolved into a professional organization dedicated to serving the community and its members, including partnering with such districts as the Los Angeles USD in the mid 2000s to orient and support hundreds of newly-recruited high school and middle teachers adjust to their new environment.

FAEA (LA) continues to support Filipino American educators, associates and other school district/university employees in the Los Angeles basin and beyond to promote and advocate for the rights, dignity and interest of its members.

In 2026, FAEA (LA) enters a new phase, pivoting towards leadership coaching and mentoring for its members as they aspire to become leaders in their fields (offered quarterly via Zoom beginning in 2027).
