Fil Am Writer: Carlos Bulosan's Legacy Honored in Los Angeles

**LOS ANGELES —** The Los Angeles Public Library Commission has voted unanimously to dedicate the Echo Park Branch Library to Filipino American writer, poet and labor activist Carlos Bulosan, recognizing a life shaped by public libraries, immigrant struggle and working-class advocacy.

Bulosan arrived in the United States in 1930 and supported himself through agricultural, service and cannery work while facing racial discrimination and poverty. During a prolonged recovery from tuberculosis in Los Angeles, he spent extensive time reading and writing at the city’s Central Library, where books and periodicals became central to his self-education.

His 1946 semi-autobiographical novel, America Is in the Heart, chronicled the hardships and aspirations of Filipino immigrants in the United States. The dedication places his name on a library in Historic Filipinotown, near communities whose experiences his work helped preserve.

The recognition also underscores Bulosan’s continuing importance as a voice for immigrant workers, civil rights and access to education. He died in Seattle in 1956, but his writing and activism remain influential across Filipino American, labor and literary communities.
